Berlin
Berlin is the capital of the reunited Germany. It is a thriving city, still undergoing extensive new construction and has much of historical and cultural interest. A useful link for more information is www.berlin.de/english/index.html
In the context of the CO2SINK project, these facts are relevant: Germany's premier geological research institute is located in nearby Potsdam and has in recent years become deeply involved in research into greenhouse gas abatement options. As a major city, Berlin and the surrounding area has an extensive network of gas supply infrastructure, including underground storage reservoirs, which help to provide buffer capacity for regional gas supply. Following the development of a new gas system, one of the storage sites, the one at Ketzin, became redundant. However, it is ideally placed for some of the special experimental work needed to continue research into CO2 abatement. This combination of local resources was a factor in the choice of location for the CO2SINK project.
